If you have not read books that deal with the subject of the first living cell, I suggest you read two types. The first are books that deal with the problems of life happening in our cosmos. These books could be called Cosmos Life books. The second type of books deal with the problems of life happening on our planet. These books could be called Earth life books. Some books to learn about current scientific theory regarding Cosmos Life are The First Three Minutes , Vital Dust and Astrobiology: A Brief Introduction .
In Hawking's Brief History Of Time/ Universe In a Nutshell you will learn on page 156 that there was one chance in 10 to the 17th power that in the first second after the Big Bang the universe would expand at exactly the necessary rate to ultimately produce life. In Smolin's The Life Of The Cosmos you will learn on page 45 that there was one chance in 10 to the 229th power that our cosmos would have the laws and constants necessary to ultimately produce life.
That is one reason why Dawkins in The God Delusion on page 165 talking about life happening as just "a billion to one" chance is absurd in the extreme. On page 175 of the same book, Dawkins refers to Smolin's Life of Cosmos theory of daughter universes as a possible explanation of how life could have happened. What he doesn't tell you is Smolin's one chance in ten to the 229th power theory. Mathematicians believe anything above one chance in ten to the 50th power to be impossible.
